Materials related to rehearsal and performance, including a published copy (Berlin: Theater-Commissions-Geschäft von H. Michaelson, 1863; "Den Bühnen gegenüber als Manuscript gedruckt"), which has been annotated as a prompt-book; 5 handwritten sheets bearing revised versions of song lyrics in the text; 2 versions of a scenario, both handwritten; 2 handwritten items (letters) that served as props; and 17 handwritten role books, for the following parts: Friedrich Schulze, Rentier; August Schulze, dessen Frau; Louise Schulze, deren Tochter; Restaurateur Schulze; Marie Schulze, dessen Frau; Schulze, Photograph; Ida Schulze; Musketier Schulze; Minna Schulze; Lauf-Schulze; Carl Müller; ein Hauswirth; ein Gehülfe; eine Hökerin; ein Polizeibeamter; ein Kellner; and ein Secundaner. (Six additional roles seem to have been called for in performance: Schulze, Partikulier--husband of Ida; Nini Schulze, deren Tochter; ein Gast; erster und zweiter Kegelschieber; and ein Schütze. A few further roles were omitted.) The published copy bears a note on the title page: "Neuestes Zugstück des Friedr.-Wilhelmstädt. Theaters in Berlin" and gives the contemporary cast at that theater on the page with the list of characters. Music is attributed to A. Lang. Music is included here as follows (see folders 668-669): handwritten piano score, with lyrics, accompanied by a title page ("Clavierauszug" but also labeled "Violino"); and individual handwritten scores for instruments, including violin, bass, clarinet, flute, and trombone. Also included is a clipping bearing the date 18 April 1863 (the newspaper name is possibly "Tribüne"), of a humor piece in verse entitled "Gasthofs-Empfehlungen von einem reisenden Engländer." Names of cast members noted on the front of role books reflect up to seven casts in Philadelphia, from 1875 (based on the presence of actors Plake, Maret, Bobene, and Hagemann, and the actesses Hahn and Dauzmann) through 1889. (Only a few names could not be placed.) Names of cast members are also noted by hand in the published copy on the page listing characters, in 2 lists--one list relates to the cast of Nov. 1879 (see playbill, folder 678); the other names are not reflected on any of the role books. The published copy, the role books, and the piano score are all labeled by hand as the property of Theodor Bloch, who was active in German-language theater in Philadelphia from 1873 until at least the mid 1890s, first as an actor and later as a prompter, and who also ran a theater lending library.
